Stop 4: THE BILLIARD ROOM
The first room on your left is the Billiard Room. While summering at Blithewold, the family participated in all kinds of activities to enjoy a simpler, healthier lifestyle, differing from the more formal one they maintained in Boston. When they could not be out-of-doors, this room was a favorite gathering place. It is said to have been Marjorie’s favorite room. It has a beautiful view of the Great Lawn and Narragansett Bay, and is the perfect spot to enjoy the spectacular sunsets that are so frequent at Blithewold.
Pool was one of the billiard games that peaked in popularity between the 1890s and the 1920s, and it was a favorite pastime of the Van Wickles and the McKees.
Many of the objects and architectural details of this room have fascinating stories.
