Stop 4: Into the Bosquet

You’re leaving the manicured North Garden behind and heading into the “woodland”. Step onto the marbled path and stop at the fountain, which is a reproduction of a Renaissance fountain by Donatello, called “Boy with Fish”. At the time the Bosquet was conceived, European-inspired gardens and thematic gardens which celebrated native plants were quite popular. This area was already filled with European ash, maple, and linden trees. Bessie and DeWolf added the Edwardian marble fountain, white tile path, and statues, and turned this woodland into a sophisticated landscape garden. Plant orders from 1908-1911 include hundreds of trees and shrubs, many of which DeWolf added to the existing plantings. He also enclosed the Bosquet with evergreens on all sides.

Stop at the fork in the path and look around at the trees surrounding you. Notice the stone head of who we believe to be Sophocles off the path to the right just past the fork. It is surrounded by daffodils in April and early May.

To see our massive Giant Sequoia, take a right and approach the wooden, octagonal Summerhouse.
