Stop 9: AUGUSTINE'S ROOM
This is Augustine's Bedroom. In 1908 when the mansion was built, Augustine was just nine years old. Bessie’s diary entry for April 30, 1908, says “Augustine selected her paper for her Blithewold room — Gay little birds and grasses.” The wallpaper was replaced in 1993 and is an excellent museum-quality reproduction of the original.
If you look at the tiles around the fireplace, you will see they are unique. The tiles may be Spanish or Portuguese, and were probably made at the turn-of-the-century. They seem to depict storybook characters, such as the "Princess and the Pea" and the "Pied Piper." The room is furnished with miscellaneous pieces simply painted white. They are typical of a Post-Victorian decor, and are appropriate for a young girl.
