STAIRCASE

Stop 7: STAIRCASE
At the bottom of the stairs is a tall case clock. It came from Augustus’ parents’ home in New Jersey. It is American, made by Isaac Brokaw of New Jersey in the late 1700s. The unusual English type bell strike movement and other brass parts of the clock show signs of being forged in America and not in England as was previously thought. It has recently been restored to working order.
As you climb the stairs, notice the three different balusters. The pattern of three balusters on the stairway is another characteristic of the Colonial Revival style. In similar fine homes, patterns of two, three, and even four different designs of balusters were common. Notice the visual impact of the banister as it curves from floor to floor.
